Casa Mila (1906-1910)
Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Antonio Gaudi
Also known as La Pedrera (the quarry), Casa Mili is an apartment building that is one of Gaudi's most admired works. It features beautiful organic forms and detailing, together with delightful spaces and great solutions to the practical needs of such a building.

The spacious apartments have various exposures, on the exterior and on two interior light wells. These light wells help to bring daylight into the interior of the building, as well as creating delightful protected patios to explore at the ground floor level.

Structurally, the 6 storey building is supported by brick and stone columns and steel web, with no load bearing walls. This allowed the freedom for for Gaudi to create Casa Mila's distinctive undulating stone facade and organic forms. The lack of load bearing walls also allowed great flexibility in the layout and personalization of the apartments. The attic is formed by brick arches that support the roof. This roof terrace, in turn, becomes a facinating and playful place to expore, with its eccentric chimneys and arches.

"The windows and doors seem to be dug out of this stone mass and are trimmed in exquisitely crafted wrought iron work with vegetal forms on the balconies and refined grilles on the doors." - Jonathan D. Meltzer

Casa Mila is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most of the apartments in Casa Mila continue to serve as private homes. Casa Mila is open for visits via guided tours, which include access to the attic, roof and an example apartment. The example apartment is very large, originally having been two separate units that have been combined together.
