Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia (1882-present)
Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Antonio Gaudi
Sagrada Familia has been under construction, off and on, since 1882. Construction is currently proceeding swiftly, though a completion date could still be 80 years away. When complete, it will be the largest basilica in the world. Beyond its size, it features some incredibly ornate, beautiful and playful decoration.

The overall design for Sagrada Familia came from its primary architect, Antonio Gaudi. Gaudi worked on Sagrada Familia for over 40 years, devoting the last 15 years of his life entirely to the project. The long period of time spent on the design is seen in a variety of styles that make up the overall design. Many of Gaudi's models were destroyed during the Spanish Civil war. The sketchiness of some of the existing designs are somewhat open to interpretation by the present-day architects on the project, who are endevouring to realize Gaudi's original vision.

The design is very rich in Catholic symbolism. Many sculptors have had their hand in creating these details, leaving a personal mark on the design of the bastilica. Gaudi also took inspiration from nature, both in the undulating forms and symbolism such as turtles and fruit.

The design features three major facades, each with a unique theme and imagery depicting the nativity, the passion, and the glory of Christ. Eight of the 18 spires in the overall design have now been completed. These towers are each over 100 meters tall, and the central tower is to be 170 meters tall. The central spire symbolizes Jesus Christ, while twelve of the other spires symbolize each of the 12 apostles, and the other five will symbolize the four evangelists and the Virgin mary. The pinnacles at the tops of the towers are decorated in tile mosaics.
