Visual Beauty
Problem / Situation
We seek beauty in the environments we occupy.
Solution
In the most successful buildings and their parts, the aesthetics are seamlessly linked with the purpose of the building or part.

Beauty comes from exactly filling function, having order and harmony, and affording physical, intellectual and emotional satisfaction

For instance, while a repeating pattern (rhythm) of paint colors can lend some degree of beauty by itself, a repeating pattern of clearly articulated structural members goes beyond that simply beauty. The result is something that is not just pleasing to the eye, but beautiful to the mind also.

Keep in mind that beauty is tied to to societal circumstances and individual preferences. The patterns in this category represesent common threads in what is considered to constituted beauty, but for each of these patterns, one can find exceptions or contradictions to these patterns. When endevouring to creating something of beauty, allow yourself to be guided by your intuition as much as by these patterns.

Architectural form and spaces can be designed to accentuate the way an individual perceives and experiences a space or object or building. The designer can creatively and sensitively manipulate or direct or suggest the way an individual should experience the project from the minutest detail to the larger whole by orchestrating how we experience and visually and physically interact with the space or built environment. The design can be conducive to interaction or void of such, depending on the intent. The experience can be enlightening or awe inspiring or can be dull and uneventful, and all of this can be achieved by how people view and feel about a particular space or form, etc. The spire of a cathedral can seem infinite if it is designed well and create the appearance of infinity by converging perspective lines along its form, which in turn can leave a lasting impression on the viewer.
