The building Envelope is what encompasses the exterior of the building. It is therfore the sum of the roof, wall, fenestrations and floor. The envelope or skin of a building is key, as it deliniates the interior from the exterior of the building. It is what protects us from the elements, and in some cases also forms part of the structural support for the building. This category contains patterns related to the envelope of a building.
Problem / Situation
The envelope what makes the "face" of the building, the envelope is what the people see. In this age of architecture where comfort and economy clash, an intelligent and careful design of the building's skin is very important.
Solution
Proper orientation is perhaps the simplest thing a designer can do. Knowing what goes where is very important as it shapes both the interior and exterior of the building. Choosing the proper materials is also a good solution. Special types of glass for example allow good visual transition and reduces glare and heat transfer as well.
Finally, common sense. Remember, architecture is the process of reduction not compilation.
