Intermediate Spaces
Problem / Situation
Often, the transition between indoors and outdoors is made too abrupt. This makes the indoors and outdoors less integrated.
Solution
Create spaces that are somewhere between indoors and outdoors, such a porches or breezeways.

Locate these spaces where they will be easily accessed, somewhere that people can pause and feel both connected to the indoors and outdoors of the building. Such spaces should not have any through traffic.
Examples
Front porch
This front porch is the perfect example of an intermediate space between the indoors and outdoors. It has a sitting area that invites one to linger, without being disturbed by others coming and going from the house, that is both connected to the house and connected to the neighborhood.
