Orientation and Location on Site
Solution
When orienting and locating a building on its site, consider:
  • Traffic patterns by which people will come to and leave from the building
  • The orientation of the sun, so as to allow rooms to be positioned to maximize natural light, and to maximize the energy efficiency of the building.
  • Sources of noise
  • Location of exisiting natural vegetation
  • Views from within building
  • Views of the building from outside, including views from street
  • Privacy for the inhabitants of the building
  • Connection to surrounding site, neighboring buildings and the street
  • Drainage
  • Existing elevations / slopes
Supporting Patterns
See Also
Arrange rooms within a building so that they receive maximum daylight during the times of the day when they are most likely to be used.

For example, place rooms use mostly in the morning on the east or south east side of the building. Likewise, place rooms used late in the day on the west side of the building.
