To create a protective space, pay particular attention to the roof, both as it is viewed from outside the building, and as it is experienced from inside the space.
Problem / Situation
Aim to create the feeling that one is living inside the roof.
Solution
Begin the design of a building by conceiving the entire form of the building as a sheltering roof, and allow the form of the building to grow out of the form of the roof. Make its form simple and sloping so that it can easily be perceived.
Express the structure and shape of the roof both on the inside and the outside.
Fit important spaces into the roof; so that large spaces occupy the highest areas where the roof is out of reach, and small areas occupy lower areas, even making it possible for one to touch the roof.
Use overhangs to shade and protect walls, openings and outdoor spaces.
