Structural Expression is a branch of
modernism where buildings express their structure on both the inside and outside. A lot of the pleasure of these buildings comes from our ability to see and directly experience how the building is held up. This ability to appreciate the "bones" of the building can lead to a deeper appreciation of and connection with the building.
Beyond expressing the buildings structure, buildings of this style often draw much of their achitectural vocabulary from modernism.
In recent years, computers have enabled engineering of enitrely new, often freeform shapes. The resulting in the structure has therefore become a key aspect of such buildings to be celebrated. This in turn has lead to increased interest in Structural Expressionism.
