Add task lighting to support specific activities
Problem / Situation
Many tasks, such as cooking, reading a book, or building things, require extra lighting directed at the task. Attempting to provide such lighting by increasing the overall ambient lighting in a room is not the most effective, as the rest of the room will be too bright. Also, even ambient lighting will tend to be too "flat"; without some shadows to show depth, many tasks will be more difficult.
Solution
Provide lighting specifically directed at surfaces or areas where tasks will be performed.
Ideally, this lighting should be adjustable in position and intensity to fit the needs of the particular task.
For task lighting, choose a light source that renders colors as accurately as possible, such as MR-16 dichoric halogen reflector lamps.

Examples
 | | Task Lighting Focussed on Table | | Here, pendant lamps hanging above a table bring focused light on the table surface, to illuminate food and other activities on the table surface. The fixtures are height adjustable to permit the user to focus the light only on the table for a very intimate pool of light, or raise the pendants for a wider spread of light. |
