About this Building / Place
This house was the laboratory of Mexican architect Luis Barragan, and he modified its design over four decades. It's a beautiful distillation of light, with walls that guide the body. It is a monastic space, free from the clutter of teh consumer world. Barragan believed that windows should provide views without being compromised by a door. For his house, the large window designed witha acruciform of thin black mullions is an enticement into the garden, but the door is placed deliberately to the side. The landscape itself is designed to be as compelling as the interior. There are various other surprising views to the outside world afforded by tiny, perfect windows. A dark, narow staircase leads to the roof terrace, held behind tall, brightly colored masonry walls.
