1872, rebuilt after 1978 fire

The original Georgian style limestone building was built in 1872. It originally contained 4 hotels, each with its own tavern. The original building was gutted by fire in 1978, and was since rebuilt with the addition of a second wing adjoining the original building by this 4 storey atrium. The building also contains a central walkway that originally served as the entrance for the horse and carriage of hotel guests. This feature is the source of building's present name "The Carriageway", and now serves as the main entrance, leading to this light-filled atrium. The building now contains retail and office space, including the offices of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).
